The AJC Decatur Book Festival: gets under way Friday night with a keynote address from Decemberists frontman and children’s author Colin Meloy and his wife and illustrator Carson Ellis. Unfortunately, there are no more tickets available for that event, but there’s plenty more to do and see during the festival, which is centered around Decatur Square.
DragonCon is an annual multimedia, popular culture convention focusing on science fiction and fantasy, gaming, comics, literature, art, music, television and film. It’s happening at several downtown Atlanta hotels Sept. 2-5, with the Hyatt Regency serving as the headquarters. Day passes are $30-$50; multi-day passes $60-$120.
Black Gay Pride: This weekend marks the 15th annual Black Gay Pride celebration in Atlanta. Most events take place at the Melia Hotel (formerly the Renaissance) on West Peachtree Street, and it continues daily through Sept. 5.
“
Spring Awakening” is the 2007 Tony-winning best musical about teenage friends coping with their burgeoning sexuality. The show is the season opener for Actors Express and continues through Oct. 1 at the theater’s King Plow Arts Center facility in Atlanta. See our review of the show.
In “Tyler Perry’s
I Don’t Want To Do Wrong,” a young military wife moves in with her parents. The show runs Sept. 2-3 at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre.
Cirque du Soleil: They won’t be bringing the distinctive tents this time around, but the fanciful Cirque du Soleil folks will still inspire wonder and amazement with “Dralion,” their latest production. After a run at Philips Arena , the show moved to Gwinnett Arena this week.
Stephen Sondheim’s “
Into the Woods” is a musical take on the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm. It continues at Alliance Theatre through Oct. 2.

In the days of Jim Crow laws,
the Green Book let black tourists know where it was safe to stay. In the new drama “The Green Book,” a black military officer, his wife and a Holocaust survivor meet in one of those tourist homes in 1953. The Theatrical Outfit production continues at the Balzer Theatre at Herren’s in downtown Atlanta and it’s been extended through Sept. 25. Check out our preview of the play.
A bachelorette celebration goes awry with two party crashers, one manipulative maid of honor and a bathtub of booze in “
Bachelorette.” Presented by Pinch ’N’ Ouch Theatre through Sept. 18 at 7 Stages Theater in Little Five Points.
The Georgia Ensemble Theatre presents “
Panhandle Slim and the Oklahoma Kid,” a comedy set in the old West written by film and Broadway star Jeff Daniels. The show runs through Sept. 18 at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center.
Theatre in the Square presents “
On Golden Pond,” best known from the film version with Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn. The show continues through Sept. 11 at the company’s home on the square in Marietta.
The
Atlanta Shakespeare Company begins a new project. They’ll be doing all of Shakespeare’s comedies in the order in which they were written, and “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” is up first. The show continues through Sept. 30 at the New American Shakespeare Tavern. “The Taming of the Shrew” is the second of Shakespeare’s comedies, and it joins “Two Gentlemen” in repertory through Oct. 1. “The Comedy of Errors” rounds out the first trio of comedies, and it rounds out the repertory beginning this weekend.
Take a look behind the scenes as Broadway hopefuls audition in “A Chorus Line.” Lawrenceville’s Aurora Theatre does the memorable Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, which runs through Sept. 4.

Bud Light Downtown Touchdown Concert begins in Centennial Olympic Park at 1 p.m. Sept. 3, and headliners O.A.R. take the stage at 3:30 p.m. The concert is a pre-game celebration of the Chick-fil-a Kickoff Game between Georgia and Boise State, which happens at the Georgia Dome at 8 p.m. Take a look at our story on how the Georgia-Boise State match-up came together.
New Trinity Baroque opens its season with grand concertos by baroque masters, including Arcangelo Corelli’s Concerto Grosso from his Op. 6, Wassenaer’s Concerto for 4 Violins (previously attributed to Pergolesi) and Bach’s Double Violin Concerto, in “Splendors of the Baroque.” The concert begins at 8 p.m. Sept. 3 at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Atlanta.
Festival: Marietta’s Art in the Park celebrates 25 years with a juried exhibition of work by more than 150 artists from all over the country and from local Marietta artists. The fest begins at 10 a.m. Sept. 3, 4 and 5 in Glover Park.
Festival:The Love the Lake Festival begins with a parade at 10 a.m. Sept. 3. that starts at Acworth First Baptist Church and concludes at Acworth’s Cauble Park, where the festival kicks off. The fest continues until 6 p.m. Sept. 3 and resumes at noon Sept. 4.
Festival: Powers’ Crossroads Country Fair and Art Festival marks its 41st year with an event that includes more than 150 exhibitors, country cooking, entertainment, demonstrations of plantation skills and more. The fest opens at 9 a.m. Sept. 3, 4 and 5 at Powers’ Plantation in Newnan.
