Halloween: Netherworld Haunted House’s custom Hollywood-quality sets and special effects have contributed to the haunt being named the No. 1 haunted house in America in 2009 by Fangoria. It continues through Nov. 5 at the Netherworld site in Norcross.

Exhibition, visual art: “The AIDS Memorial Quilt” was founded in 1987 as a poignant memorial, a powerful tool for use in preventing new HIV infections, and the largest ongoing community arts project in the world. With more then 40,000 panels, the blocks on display at the Museum of Design Atlanta will be changed out each month Oct. 7-Jan. 1. See our interview with the curators of the accompanying exhibition, “Graphic Intervention: 25 Years of International AIDS Posters.”

The Atlanta Shakespeare Company presents “Macbeth,” a tale of betrayal and the lust for power and one of the bard’s best known works. There is a preview at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 7, with all tickets $15. the show runs through Oct. 30 at the New American Shakespeare Tavern.comedy:

Comedy: Former “Saturday Night Live” cast member and impressionist Darrell Hammond brings his stand-up act to the Punchline Oct. 6-8.

A mother struggles to hold on to her family, a son struggles to let go and a daughter struggles to find her way in the world in this Tennessee Williams’ “The Glass Menagerie.” Georgia Shakespeare present the beloved classic at Oglethorpe University through Oct. 30.

The Kennesaw State University Department of Theatre, Performance Studies & Dance presents “The Cocteau Hour,” a double bill highlighting the works of French playwright, author and filmmaker Jean Cocteau, at 8 p.m. Oct. 7-8 and 2 p.m. Oct. 9 in the university’s Black Box Theater.

David E. Talbert’s “What My Husband Doesn’t Know” stars former Destiny’s Child member Michelle Williams, Clifton Davis and Morris Chestnut. Performances take place Oct. 7-9 at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre.

Three Civil War re-enactors clash with a theater critic and radio commentator in the new comedy “Gray Area.” The show opens Oct. 7 and continues through Oct. 30 at Aurora Theatre in Lawrenceville.

“Broke” is Atlanta playwright Janece Shaffer’s new comedy that takes an almost-too-close-for-comfort look at joblessness in the new America. The show continues at the Alliance Theatre through Oct. 23. Check out our review of the show.

The vast majority of hip-hop musicians are working outside of the mainstream — and outside the big-budget world of the major labels. A3C Hip Hop Festival brings an impressive number of some of the underground’s best artists together, offering a compact look at innovative practitioners of a genre that is too often defined by a few big-name, mainstream stars. The performances happen at the Masquerade  Oct. 6-8.

Callaway Gardens’ inaugural Harvest Moon Festival brings together some pretty impressive talent, including the B-52s, John Hiatt, Mat Kearney, Gin Blossoms, Shawn Mullins and Big Head Todd and the Monsters. The fest happens Oct. 7-9 at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain.

The 41st annual Atlanta Pride Festival combines a party atmosphere with the more serious business of offering a public demonstration supporting civil liberties for sexual minorities. The parade, which kicks off at 1 p.m. from the MARTA Civic Center station, is the weekend’s big event, but there will be many activities all around town and in Piedmont Park

“Motherhood, the Musical” takes a tuneful and loving look at the blessings and perils of being a mom. The show continues through Nov. 20 at the 14th Street Playhouse.

“All Blues” tells the true story of Ray Sprigle, a white journalist who sets out to report on the black experience in the 1948 Jim Crow South first-hand, by disguising himself as a black man for 30 days. The show runs through Oct. 9 at 7 Stages Theater in Little Five Points.

Get the story behind the witches of Oz in the tuneful musical “Wicked.” The touring show returns to Atlanta for a four-week run, playing at the Fox Theatre through Oct. 9. Check out our interview with Mark Jacoby, the Tennessee native and one-time Atlantan who plays the Wizard.

A mysterious cache of love letters leads a white professor of gender studies from the bayous of Baton Rouge to the Chicago doorstep of Leo, a divorced African-American chef, in “Tree.” The Horizon Theatre Company’s latest production continues through Oct. 16.

The 40th year of the Georgia Apple Festival includes more than 300 vendors with handmade, hand-crafted items, as well as many on-site demonstrations of how selected types of crafts are made. An antique car show is held at the Civic Center on Oct. 8. The parade is at 10 a.m. Oct. 15. The fest is centered at the Ellijay Lions Club Fairgrounds in the North Georgia town of Ellijay.

Festival, air show: See military aircraft demo teams, aerobatics, sky diving, a jet truck and a host of vintage aircraft at the Great Georgia Airshow. There will also be aircraft rides, exhibits and a playground for the kids. It all happens Oct. 8 and 9 at Atlanta Regional Airport’s Falcon Field in Peachtree City.

“Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing: How the Apollo Theater Shaped American Entertainment” is a multimedia exhibition that spotlights the New York City landmark’s powerful impact on the entertainment business. It opens Oct. 8 and continues through March 4 at the Atlanta History Center

Festival: The Oakhurst Arts and Music Festival offers a day of entertainment, children’s activities and info from community non-profit groups. The fun starts at 10 a.m. Oct. 8 in Decatur’s Harmony Park.

Festival: Help celebrate 38 years of the Lilburn Daze Arts and Crafts Festival — which provides a forum to promote local crafts, authors and performers — beginning at 10 a.m. Oct. 8 in Lilburn City Park.

Beer, festival: If you love your brew, the place to be this weekend if the Great Atlanta Beer Festival, which is happening 3-8 p.m. Oct. 8 at Turner Field

The family-friendly Parktoberfest, showcasing regional food and musical talent, is Whittier Mill Village’s annual fund-raiser for Whittier Mill Park. The festival takes place 3-10 p.m. Oct. 8 at Whittier Mill Village Park in Atlanta.

Families, health: Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta invites kids and parents to Strong4Life Atlanta, a community event that offers cooking demonstrations from Chef Marvin Woods, samples of healthy foods and opportunities to connect with community resources that will help them live a healthy lifestyle. 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 8 near the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site (on Auburn Avenue between Boulevard and Howell)

Carrollton Fine Arts and Crafts MeccaFest features fine artists from across the country who have been chosen by a juried process, along with children’s activities, storytelling and live entertainment. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 8-9 at the Carrollton Cultural Art Center.

The Georgia Philharmonic Orchestra’s  “Foreign Shores” takes a musical trip to Scotland with Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony and Hebrides Overture. The concert begins at 7 p.m. Oct. 8 at the  Roswell Cultural Arts Center.

The Atlanta Sacred Chorale presents its season premiere at 8 p.m. Oct. 8 in Emory University’s Schwartz Center for Performing Arts.

Visual arts: “Fallen” features painting, sculpture, ceramic, mixed media and jewelry with each artist interpreting the theme. The opening reception is 5-10 p.m. Oct. 8 and the show continues through Oct. 31 at Decatur Market & Gallery.

Acclaimed British pianist Paul Lewis returns to Spivey Hall at Clayton State University in Morrow with popular works by Franz Schubert as part of his international two-year project, “Schubert and the Piano: 1822-1828.” He’ll perform at 3 p.m. Oct. 9.

Music, dance: Wind of Colorful Guizhou features the song and dance of ethnic minorities from China’s beautiful, unspoiled Guizhou Province. The show begins at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 9 in the Gwinnett Arena in Duluth.
